Diet-weed: What is it and why is it Popular

In CBD by jane gonzales

The 2018 Farm Bill paved the way for making CBD and other premium hemp products more accessible for everyone. Unlike CBD, marijuana is only legal in some states, but there is a loophole in the bill that technically makes it legal to sell or buy a less-potent version of the substance. Although it has been discovered years ago, Delta 8 THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), extracted from hemp, rose to popularity in 2021.

What is Delta-8?

Delta-8 THC, also called Diet weed or marijuana lite by pot lovers, is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in the cannabis hemp plant. Because of the Farm Bill, Delta-8 products are federally legal (check your local jurisdiction), you can now buy them in many gas stations, smoke shops, convenience stores, and recreational marijuana shops in several states.

Why is it called diet weed?

Pot lovers and consumers lovingly refer to Delta-8 as “diet weed” and “marijuana lite”. This is because Delta-8 looks and smells like the real thing but extracted from hemp. For the most part, Delta-8 THC does not cause paranoia and other psychoactive effects.

Just like CBD and premium hemp, Delta 8 is consume in various ways including edibles, gummies, vape pen cartridges, oils, and d8 flower jars. Providing consumers with more choices so they can choose the type and potency that is suitable to their preferences.

Why is it popular?

Delta-8 has become one of the fastest-growing products in the hemp industry. It rose to popularity because, unlike Delta 9 THC, Delta 8 is legal to use in several states.

Just like other hemp products, it also offers a range of benefits that entice consumers to try it. Further research and tests are still required to prove that CBD and Hemp products like oils and Delta 8 gummies can be used to treat certain conditions.

Researchers Jessica Kruger, PhD, a clinical assistant professor of community health and health behavior at the University at Buffalo, and Daniel J. Kruger, PhD, an investigator at the Population Studies Center at the University of Michigan polled more than 500 people from 38 states and asked them to compare delta-8 to cannabis. Their respondents claim that they felt less paranoid and anxious while using Delta 8. Relaxation, euphoria, and pain relief are some of the benefits claimed by the respondent.

A more detailed result states that “…71% of the users reported “a lot or a great deal” of relaxation, and 68% said they’d had euphoria. More than half got relief from pain. 74% said they did not have anxiety, and 83% said they didn’t have paranoia, which can occur with marijuana use.”

Several consumers of Delta 8 claim to experience the following benefits:

  • Calm nausea
  • Boost appetite
  • Ease pain relief
  • Boost mental health
  • Prevent vomiting during cancer treatments

Will I test positive during a drug test?

Although it is legal in most states, ingesting Delta-8 prior to taking a drug test is not recommended. While it is unlikely to get you in trouble with authorities, you are likely to fail the test if you ingested Delta 8 a few days prior (at least 30 days depending on the test). Delta-8 is a form of THC and while drug tests often look for traces of Delta-9, Delta-8 could show up as a positive for THC.

At the moment, commercial urine drug tests don’t differentiate between different cannabinoids and will return a positive result. In such cases, you may be required to retake the test after a few days until the result is negative. To avoid such inconvenience, refrain from taking any product containing premium hemp if you are scheduled for a drug test.

In most cases, it is safe to use Delta-8 products. However, consumers must be mindful of the amount they consume in order to fully enjoy its benefits. Keep in mind that while others find it beneficial, the effect is not the same for everyone. If you feel anything peculiar or you are experiencing any adverse effects, consult with your doctor as soon as possible.

If you are undergoing treatment and wish to try using delta-8, it’s highly recommended that you consult your doctor on how it may affect your current condition or treatment, especially if you are taking certain medications. This way, you will know how certain substances will interact with each other and how they will affect your condition.
