How to use and get the most out of CBD oil

In CBD by jane gonzales

Over the years, the use of various CBD and premium hemp products has become widely accepted. While many doctors and medical professionals still don’t prescribe the majority of CBD products, there are some medications (Epidiolex) that contain CBD that are used to treat certain medical conditions. There are also several studies conducted over the years that suggest that patients suffering from a range of medical conditions can benefit from using CBD or products containing traces of the substance.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a chemical compound from the cannabinoid family. It is one of the 100+ types of cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.

As mentioned above, medical practitioners don’t usually prescribe or recommend using CBD, but it’s legal to purchase through reputable retailers. If you intend to use any type of CBD for delta-8 products, it is highly recommended that you do some research on its uses and the existing policies on the use of CBD in your city or state as the technicalities may get somewhat confusing.

The cannabis plant has many varieties and the US Drug Enforcement Administration or DEA used to classify all these varieties as Schedule 1 substances. This means that these substances have “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse”. This changed when the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 or Farm bill, legalized the use and distribution of premium hemp. According to the legislation “hemp” is cannabis that contains 0.3% THC. If cannabis or any product with traces of CBD contains more than the indicated amount, it is considered “marijuana”.

What are the types of CBD?

There are different ways in which CBD and delta-8 can be ingested. In most cases, selecting the appropriate type depends on the intended purpose and preference of the user.

Edibles are a type of CBD product that comes in different varieties that the user can eat or drink. These include gummies like uplifting edible sour worms and chocolates. Since CBD is mixed with many other ingredients, the waiting time for edibles takes effect is longer, usually after 20 minutes to 4 hours of consumption.

CBD Oils and tinctures compared to other types, are a more concentrated form of CBD. They are ingested by placing the substance under the tongue using a dropper and the substance is then absorbed into the bloodstream.

CBD may also be used in vaping, similar to e-cigarettes. The user inhales vaporized liquid containing CBD. While nicotine is often not used when CBD is, it is possible to mix the two.

Capsules and pills are similar to vitamins and supplements. They are taken orally and they usually contain CBD Oil.

Topicals are a type of CBD that is intended to treat localized pain. Topicals usually come in the form of CBD-infused oils, creams, or lotions. Aside from treating pain, they are also used as massage oils and for hair care and skin care.

Is it safe to use CBD?

The World Health Organization indicates in a study published in 2017 that, in its pure state, CBD is safe. It is also well-tolerated by humans and animals. CBD is also not likely to cause physical dependence or abuse.

What are the perceived benefits of ingesting or using CBD oil?

Possibly Relieve pain and discomfort

Ingesting CBD oil can have an effect on your brain’s receptors which may help in pain management. Over the years, there have been several studies that show that cannabis can offer some benefits to patients after chemotherapy treatments. Other preclinical studies are trying now trying to see if CBD can help relieve pain, discomfort and other symptoms resulting from:

  • arthritis
  • chronic pain
  • MS pain
  • muscle pain
  • spinal cord injuries

Clinical trials on the use of CBD are necessary to properly determine whether or not it is an appropriate medication or aid for pain management.

Said to Relieve stress and anxiety

Some studies suggest that CBD may be able to help in managing anxiety. According to researchers, ingesting a certain dose of CBD may change the way one’s brain receptors respond to serotonin, which is a chemical linked to mental health. These receptors are tiny proteins attached to your cells that receive chemical messages and help your cells respond to different stimuli.

One study where patients were asked to take a 600mg dose of CBD showed that it helped people with social anxiety give a speech. Previous tests conducted with animal test subjects found that the use of CBD may allegedly help lessen or manage anxiety levels through:

  • decreasing physiological effects of anxiety
  • inducing sleep in cases of insomnia
  • improving symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder
  • reducing stress levels
  • Helps lessen seizure

While there have been FDA-approved medications that contain CBD that are used to treat seizures for 2 types of epilepsy, further studies are required to see if it can also be used to help patients from other types.

A study conducted in 2016 asked 214 participants with epilepsy to add oral doses of 2 to 5mg of CBD per day to their existing anti-epilepsy medications. The participants were monitored by researchers for 12 weeks, checking the frequency of the seizures and recording side effects. When the trial ended, the study reported that participants had 36.5 percent fewer seizures each month.

No matter what your intended use, it is always best to consult with experts about the effects of ingesting CBD oil along with other medications for your condition. Even if specialists can’t recommend a certain product, they will be able to inform you about how ingredients in different substances may react.
