Can You Take CBD Products On Your Next Flight?

Since the Farm Bill was signed in 2018, carrying CBD products has been allowed onboard flights to most states. However, if you are boarding an international flight, you may need to check with the airline to see if they allow CBD onboard or check if it is allowed in the country you are travelling to.

Whether you use CBD for medical or leisure purposes, it is always best to be cautious when carrying CBD products, including uplifting edibles sour worms. It may be safe to carry or consume them in the US, but taking them abroad may get you in trouble, especially in conservative nations where there are strict regulations on the possession and consumption of CBD and other products derived from the cannabis plant.

What are the most common reasons for carrying CBD when travelling?

There are many reasons why some travellers need/bring delta 8 or CBD products when flying.

Aside from its potential as an antidepressant, CBD also has properties that can aid in relieving anxiety, pain, and insomnia. Hence, some travellers buy CBD products that they can use during trips to lessen their discomfort (and sometimes fear) when flying at a high altitude.

Individuals who are too busy with work also tend to use CBD or vegan hemp capsules to help them relax, especially during business trips or long-haul flights.

How does it help a person taking the flight?

CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system or ECS which is responsible for keeping the body balanced. It affects other functions such as appetite, hormones, immune response, mood, and pain.

Unlike THC, which is known for its psychoactive properties that may cause distress to the individual, CBD allows users to feel more relaxed once it is introduced to the body.

Those who are afraid of heights or those who are scared of flying (in general) use CBD to lessen their fear/anxiety. This helps in making the flight more comfortable, if not enjoyable, for the traveller.

Can you carry CBD on US flights?

Because of the Farm Bill, CBD users are now allowed to bring CBD and hemp products onboard US flights. Users may also bring CBD and hemp-derived products such as beverages, health products, and CBD hemp oil as long as they comply with the requirements of the airports/airlines, especially for liquid products.

Note that only hemp-derived CBD products (containing no more than 0.3%THC) are considered legal federally. Carrying products that contain more than 0.3% THC onboard may get you in trouble because it is classified as marijuana. Unlike the use and purchase of CBD, the use of marijuana has not been legalized in all 50 states. Hence, users must be cautious when buying hemp-derived products, especially if they are planning on taking these products during their trips to different states.

What products can you take on onboard US flights?

CBD users can bring almost any premium hemp products onboard including (but not limited to) beverages, pet snacks, supplements, health products, and CBD oil.

When carrying liquids, be sure to use tightly sealed containers to avoid leaks. It helps if you check the requirements (e.g. amount of liquid allowed, ideal container size) of the airline you’re flying with to avoid spending too much time on luggage inspections and getting in trouble with airport authorities.

If you intend to take premium hemp cigars, you may want to check with the airline about their regulations just to be safe. You may be asked to keep them in your check-in luggage as smoking is not allowed.

As much as possible, opt for solid products when travelling. If not, use small containers for liquid products. Most airports and airlines only allow up to 100ml for liquid products and these containers must be sealed properly and packed in resealable bags.

Remember when bringing CBD products on your trips:
  • It is better to opt for solid CBD products such as CBD edibles when travelling by plane to avoid being held up on security checks or having to pack too many small containers for creams, ointment, oils, and other liquid products.
  • It is federally legal to buy and consume hemp-derived CBD products in all 50 states, but there are still states that have confusing regulations with regard to CBD and hemp products.
  • Products with more than 0.3% THC are not allowed since they are considered illegal on a federal level. Airports are considered federal properties. Hence, it is illegal to carry CBD products that contain more than 0.3% THC.
  • Medical marijuana is only allowed in certain states. Hence, you may be required to present proof such as a medical marijuana card if caught by authorities. The best way to avoid this is by not carrying marijuana at all.
The government classifies hemp as any plant from the cannabis family that contains no more than 0.3% THC; marijuana as any plant from the cannabis family that contains more than 0.3% THC.
